Switched from setting tools with a feeler gauge to a 1 inch gauge block on the Haas, and my setup time got cut in half
I ran a 40 piece run of 6061 brackets at the shop in Dayton and kept fighting a .015 taper that I blamed on the vice for two weeks. A guy who runs a VF-2 said to toss the feeler gauge and touch off with a 1 inch gauge block against the spindle nose instead, and the taper went away on the first part. Has anybody else run into their tool offsets drifting because of how they touch off, or is it just me?
Are you sure the gauge block fixed your offsets and not just your method of setting them? The feeler gauge method has you guessing at what "drag" feels right, and that changes part to part, especially if the holder or spindle nose has a burr. A 1 inch block gives you a hard stop every time, so of course your numbers repeat. The taper probably wasn't the vice at all, it was you touching off a few thou different on each tool and the error stacking up over the run.
