Spindle bearing just let go on a Friday afternoon...
Was running a 3/8 endmill in 6061 aluminum, pushing maybe 60% spindle load, and the machine started making this low growl I'd never heard before. By the time I hit the feed hold, the spindle was already vibrating bad enough to leave chatter marks on the part. Shut it down, pulled the belt cover, and found grease leaking out of the bearing housing. Had to call the boss at 4:30 on a Friday to tell him we're dead in the water until the service guy can get here Monday. Anyone else had a spindle fail like that with no warning?

Nothing like that Friday 4:30 panic call to really make your weekend start off right lol. Spindle bearings are like a bad relationship, they seem fine right up until they blow up in your face with zero warning. That low growl is the worst sound in a shop, you know it's over but you're just hoping it's not. Grease leaking out of the housing is basically the bearing saying "I'm done, go home" haha. Service guy better bring donuts Monday or there's gonna be a riot.

That "low growl" is exactly right - it's like the machine is literally growling at you, telling you it's been holding a grudge all week and finally decided to act on it. I had a Haas VF-3 eat its spindle bearings on a Tuesday afternoon a few years back, and that sound went from "hmm that's weird" to "OH THAT'S EXPENSIVE" in about 90 seconds flat. The worst part is the cleanup though, you know? Grease and metal dust everywhere, and you're stuck there on a Friday night with a rag and a can of brake cleaner while everyone else is heading to happy hour.
