Shoutout to the maintenance guy who caught my spindle load issue before it got ugly

Last month at our shop in Cleveland, the new guy was running a job and the machine sounded off but he kept going. I was on the next machine over and didn't think much of it. But our maintenance guy, Ray, walked past, stopped, and said 'that spindle sounds like it's chewing rocks.' He pulled the covers off and found a bearing that was about 30 minutes from seizing. We swapped it out during lunch and got back to cutting by 2pm. Cost us maybe $400 in parts instead of a $9,000 spindle replacement. Has anyone else had a support guy save them like that just by listening?

Bet the machine's sound profile is now part of Ray's mental checklist, so he'll catch the next one even faster. That kind of ear is worth more than any diagnostic software they sell.

Paying attention beats paying for parts.
