Rant: My boss in Dayton said I'd scrap the part if I ran it at 500 SFM

I ran it at 525 SFM anyway and got a mirror finish on that 6061. Has anyone else found their machine's sweet spot is higher than the book says?

Yeah, the book numbers are just a safe starting point. My old VF2 always liked aluminum about 50 SFM faster than the charts said, especially with a fresh tool. The real trick is listening to the cut and watching the chips. If it sounds smooth and the chips are coming off silver, not blue, you're good. Your boss probably just didn't want a crash on his shift.

What feed and depth were you running at? Sometimes the book speed is fine but the chip load is way off for a clean cut.
