Old timer told me to ignore speeds and feeds on a steel job. Total disaster.

A retired machinist at my shop said 'just send it' on some 4140 prehard and I ended up welding a $400 endmill to the part inside 30 seconds. Has anyone else had bad luck following advice from the 'been doing it 40 years' crowd?

Oh man. That's exactly the kind of advice that sounds tough and old school but just skips over why we have numbers in the first place. It's like when a guy at the hardware store tells you to just bang on a stuck bolt with a hammer. Sometimes it works. Sometimes you snap it off and spend three hours drilling it out. The numbers might be a pain to look up but they're usually there because someone else already welded a tool to a part trying to skip them.

Ain't that the truth @charles_kelly43? Nothing worse than taking shortcuts only to end up with twice the work and a busted part.
