Hot take: switching from air blast to mist coolant cut my tool changes way down
Ran the same 4140 job on my Haas for six months with air blast. Tools were chipping out around part 40 every run. Switched to a cheap mist setup in March, same feeds and speeds, and now I get 120 parts before anything needs touching. Chip evacuation was the problem the whole time and I blamed the inserts for it. Anyone else running mist on steel or did I just get lucky with this setup?
Hold on, tools chipping at part 40 every single run and you blamed the inserts? That means it was happening like clockwork, every job, and nobody stopped to ask why the chips were stacking up in the cut instead of flying out. That's a crazy amount of wasted inserts and wasted time before someone tried a $50 mist unit. I get that air blast is the go to, but on 4140 in a pocket or deep cut, air alone just parks the chips right where the tool re-cuts them. Mist keeps them wet and moving, so the edge actually sees fresh metal. How did it take six months of the same failure before the coolant got a look?
