Guy at the tool crib in Dayton told me coolant flow matters more than spindle speed, and my inserts lasted 3x longer
I used to crank the RPMs up anytime a finish cut looked rough, figured faster meant cleaner. Last month the tool crib guy in Dayton, Ray, hears me complaining about burning through inserts on 4140 and flat out says I got it backwards, flow beats speed. So I ran his way for two weeks on the same job, dropped the RPMs about 15 percent and bumped coolant up until the chips washed out clean, and I went from swapping inserts every 40 parts to every 120. Same inserts, same steel, nothing else changed. I'm not saying speed doesn't matter, but I was dialing it up to fix a chip evacuation problem the whole time. Ray's been doing this 31 years and I never asked him anything before that. Anybody else notice flow making a bigger difference than the numbers on the dial, or am I just late to this?
