A setup guy from a job fair flipped my whole view on tool offsets

He said most crashes are from operators trusting the last guy's numbers instead of touching off fresh, and that hit different after I lost a $400 end mill last Tuesday on a part I 'knew' was dialed... has anyone else started zeroing everything themselves no matter what the handoff sheet says?

Why would you touch off fresh on every single job when the handoff sheet has been working fine for years? Youre just adding time to the setup and giving yourself more chances to fat finger the wrong edge finder or forget to reset the tool probe. That $400 end mill probably crashed because you rushed the new setup or bumped something, not because the guy before you was lying. Ive seen guys zero everything out of habit and still smoke a cutter because they trusted their own fresh touch off over a proven print and wore part. If the numbers match the last ten parts you ran, leave em alone and spend that time checking your speeds and feeds instead.
