My group chat got screenshotted and turned into a meme thread

Last Tuesday my friend in Denver posted a screenshot of our group chat joke about a celeb's apology tour, and it blew up in a gossip subreddit. I got like 40 notifications from randoms roasting my takes, which was wild because I only said the apology felt scripted. One person pulled a 2019 clip and proved I was wrong about the timeline, so I had to delete my whole Reddit account over it. Has anyone else had their private fan snark come back to bite them like that?

That exact thing happened to me last year with a hockey fan group I was in. I made a joke about a player's post game interview and someone clipped it into a meme that compared him to a robot. It got picked up by a team blog and suddenly I had fans of the player in my DMs calling me out. What helped was I just owned it publicly, I went into the thread and said yeah that was me, I was being a dumb fan, and I actually apologized to the player's biggest fan account. That killed it pretty fast, people moved on once I stopped hiding. Deleting your whole account just makes it look worse, like you got caught doing something shady. Best move is to laugh at yourself and let the thread die on its own.
