Had to choose between a proper apology or a non-apology statement last month

My cousin is a small influencer with about 12k followers. She got called out for an old tweet from 2016 that was pretty tone deaf. I told her to just say sorry directly and move on. She went with the PR statement her manager wrote that said 'if anyone was hurt by my words' and it made everything worse. She lost like 3k followers in two days. Any of you dealt with someone who won't just apologize straight up?

...and the worst part is she probably thought the PR line would protect her somehow. My brother did the exact same thing last year when his band's old tweets resurfaced. He had this whole statement written by the label that said "we apologize if our past words didn't align with who we are today" and people tore him apart in the comments. I told him a simple "I was wrong, I'm sorry" would've worked way better but he was too scared to just own it. Instead he sat there watching his followers drop and the whole thing spiraled into like three apology videos that just made everyone more mad. It's like people forget that influencers aren't really politicians or CEOs, nobody expects a legal statement from them. A real human response goes so much further than some carefully worded BS.
