Warning: found a fake inspection tag trick that almost made me look bad in front of a customer in Buffalo
Pulled up to a house on Delaware Ave for a routine sweep. Customer hands me a tag from a company I never heard of. Looked legit at first. Right font, right size, even had a serial number. Then I noticed the crease pattern. Real tags get creased from being folded into a pocket. This one was creased flat, like it sat in a box.
Called the number on it. Disconnected. Asked the homeowner when the last sweep was. She said six months ago. The tag said three. That means a whole season of creosote built up that nobody caught. Flue was at stage two when I ran my camera down.
What actually worked: I started taking a photo of every tag I find during an inspection, date and all, and texting it to myself. Cheap trick, takes ten seconds. But when the homeowner wants proof of what was there before I touched anything, I have it.
Anyone else run into these knockoff tags? Where are they even coming from?
