Tried the new rotary brush kit from SweepRight and got way more creosote buildup than usual

I swapped out my regular rods for their fancy new system last Tuesday on a job in Cincinnati. Figured it'd save time on a heavy buildup, but the brush kept catching and smearing tar along the flue walls instead of scraping it off clean. Had to run a second pass with my old steel wire brush to fix it. Anyone else have this issue or was I just using it wrong?

Sounds like another case of new and shiny not meaning better.

Shiny new paperweight" - yeah, that's a pretty honest way to put it. I think a lot of us have been there, @laurac96. You get something that's supposed to be an upgrade and it just... sits there looking pretty. In my experience, the older stuff that's been around for a few years often has the kinks worked out. The new versions sometimes feel like they needed a few more months of testing before hitting the shelf. Your mileage may vary, but I've learned to wait and see how other people's initial excitement shakes out before jumping in myself.

A lot of times the hype around new stuff is way overblown, but sometimes waiting means you miss out on something that actually works better. Older gear can be clunky and outdated in ways you don't notice until you try a newer option. It's a gamble either way, really.
