Showerthought: manual sweeping vs power sweeping old clay flues

Spent 3 hours with a hand brush on a 1930's house last Thursday when a buddy could've knocked it out in 45 minutes with his rotary kit, now I'm wondering if my stubbornness is costing me money or just building character.

That 1930s clay liner is probably cracked anyway, so less elbow grease beats an accidental full tear out.

Totally disagree actually. That clay liner might be fine still if nobody messed with it. Plenty of old houses have original liners working just fine after 90 years. Why risk cracking it open when you can probably just clean it carefully? A little elbow grease now saves you from a huge headache later. Plus finding a good chimney guy to reframe the whole thing is expensive and hard to do right. Would you really take that gamble over some scrubbing?
