Saw a house fire in Rochester last month that started from a creosote flake the size of a quarter
I was doing a sweep two streets over when the trucks went by, and it turned out the homeowner had been burning green wood in a fireplace for two winters without a cleaning. When I got in there after the fire marshal cleared it, the flue had creosote built up almost two inches thick, hard and shiny like glass. I used to tell folks every other year was fine if they only burned a few cords, but I don't say that anymore. Now I hand every customer a card with the date and tell them to call me at the one year mark, no exceptions. Anyone else changed their pitch after seeing a bad one up close?
