PSA: Old timer told me to sweep top-down and I ignored him for a year

Last winter I was doing a job over on Maple Street and a 70-year-old sweep named Hank watched me set up my rods from the bottom. He told me to always start from the top because you push less debris into the flue. I laughed it off and kept doing it my way. But after 3 cleanings where the customer called back about soot falling into the firebox, I tried his method. It cut my redo rate to zero. Any of you guys stick with bottom-up sweeping and have issues?

Three callbacks is three too many. I switched after two myself.

How many times did you have to go back before you switched? I'm just curious what the breaking point was. Because three callbacks in one season seems like a lot of wasted time.

Brought the wrong car home from the shop once. That was my breaking point.
