Old house in Portland had a flue I couldn't figure out

Was up on a 1920s craftsman bungalow yesterday. The homeowner said they'd been having smoke backup. Found a flue tile that was completely offset by about 3 inches. Someone must have jammed a liner in there crooked 20 years ago. Do you guys see weird old retrofit jobs like that often?

Started helping a buddy with a 1910 colonial last month and found the same thing. The old clay flue was split right down the middle and someone had just shoved a stainless liner in there with no regard for alignment. Honestly looked like they just kicked it into place and called it a day. Took us an hour to pull it out and reset it properly, the smoke damage in the firebox was nasty from all the backup. Ngl these old houses always have some sketchy DIY story hiding in the walls.

Did your buddy try fixing that crooked liner with a shopvac and a prayer?
