My uncle swore by using a shop vac with a HEPA filter for the initial clean-out, but the first time I tried it on a 1920s farmhouse flue, the fine ash just blew right back out the top like a tiny volcano.

Has anyone found a better method for those super-fine, ancient ash deposits without making a total mess of the roof?

What about wetting it down first? I use a garden sprayer to mist the ash inside the flue before I even start. Makes it clump up and stops it from flying everywhere. Then you can scoop it out or vacuum it without the volcano effect.

Huh, that actually makes a lot of sense. Never thought of it that way before.

Try a leaf blower from the roof down first.
