I swore the plastic chimney brush was junk, then a 70 year old sweep in Akron made me eat my words
Last month I was at a supply shop in Akron picking up some rods when this older sweep, probably 70, saw me laughing at the plastic bristle brushes on the clearance rack. He said he'd been using one on clay tile flues for 15 years and I flat out didn't believe him. Figured plastic would melt, snap, or just smear creosote around. He told me to grab a $12 one and try it on a light soot job before I judged it. So I did, on a small rental house with maybe a quarter inch of soft buildup, and honestly it pulled cleaner than my wire brush on that tile. The bristles flexed into the curves instead of scraping grooves, and it didn't chip anything. I still won't touch it for heavy glaze or a real chimney fire job, but for light maintenance it's now in my truck. Anybody else got a cheap tool that made them look dumb after years of knocking it?
