Finally got a customer to understand why their 6-inch flue liner needs a proper rain cap, not just chicken wire.

After explaining how the wire mesh clogs with creosote and causes moisture issues three times this month, seeing that new stainless steel cap go up felt like a real win.

My own learning curve involved a squirrel nest and a very smoky living room. You have to admire their dedication to home building, if not their choice of location. A proper cap solves so many problems you didn't even know you had.

Ever wonder what else they're storing in there? Found a whole stash of acorns and a chewed up tennis ball in mine last fall. The vent cap was bent up like they'd been using it as a door.
