Drove 3 hours to a job site and the chimney cap was the least of the problem

Last week I took a service call in Boise, checked the flue and found a raccoon nest built right on top of the damper. Homeowner said the smell was 'fine' until last month, but the soot buildup behind it was 2 inches thick. I had to tell them a basic sweep wouldn't cut it, they needed a full liner replacement. Any of you ever deal with animals getting in through a missing crown? How do you even quote that mess without scaring people off?

Ugh, raccoons are the worst, that quote is basically whatever they'll pay to fix it!
