A bride asked me to pose for photos because she liked my outfit
I was cleaning a chimney at a venue before a wedding. The bride saw me in my old-style sweep gear and assumed I was a performer. She wanted me in her pictures for good luck. I had to explain I was there for work, not fun. It felt awkward because she seemed let down. This occurs a lot, and I feel we must teach people about our actual role. We are not lucky charms, we are pros who keep homes safe.

Wow, that's so frustrating but I get it completely. What gets me is why this lucky charm idea even exists for your job in the first place. Is it just an old story people won't let go of, even when they see you doing the actual, dirty work? Do you ever try to turn those awkward moments into a quick chance to explain what you really do to keep them safe? It seems like the basic thing here is people seeing the clothes and not the person doing a skilled job.

Remember that old urban legend about the guy who thought his car ran on faith, not gas? He'd just pray at the pump instead of filling the tank. People want a simple magic trick, not the messy, skilled work that actually keeps things running. They see the uniform and make up a story so they don't have to think about the real danger.

Ever think they NEED the charm to feel safe, @hollym29?
