My dumbest moment in a hot kitchen last week
So I'm doing a Friday night service, we're getting slammed. I reach for my favorite fish spatula and the handle just snaps clean off in my hand. Not even a crack first, just snap. I'm standing there holding a piece of plastic and the metal head is on the floor. Had to use a regular spatula the rest of the night and it was terrible. Anyone else ever had a tool just give up on you mid service?

Honestly I think the real issue isn't the brand or the backup plan it's that we treat our tools way worse than we should. Like yeah a fish spat is thin but if you're using it right the metal should flex not the handle part. That snap probably happened because the plastic got too hot over time and got brittle from being left on the grill edge or thrown in a dishwasher it wasn't meant for. I've seen guys grab a cool tool from the rack and it's still warm to the touch from sitting near the heat all shift. That wear and tear is invisible until you're holding a useless handle.

Man, that's rough. I had a similar thing happen with a pair of tongs that just let go mid-flip on a busy grill night. What worked for me was keeping a backup set of my go-to tools in a little drawer under the station. I started stashing a spare fish spat and a backup pair of tongs after that. Saves so much headache when the main one dies on you.

Wait, isn't a fish spatula kinda thin and flexible for heavy grill work though? I mean, I love mine for eggs and delicate stuff but on a busy grill night with big proteins I feel like you'd want something sturdier. Maybe it's just me but I always grab a heavy duty turner for the grill and save the fish spat for pans. Idk, if it works for you that's cool, just seems like it would bend or snap at the worst possible moment.
