Dropped $80 on a Thermapen and now I can't believe I cooked without one

After 6 years of guessing temps by touch I finally bought a one second read thermometer and it caught my chicken being 15 degrees under before I pulled it off, anyone else have a tool they ignored for way too long?

Funny how the cheap stuff makes you work twice as hard for half the result. Good tools just make life easier, period.

I actually watched a YouTube video last week where a mechanic tested a $15 socket wrench against a $200 one and the cheap one stripped the bolt on the third use. That kind of thing sticks with me because @brown.gavin is exactly right, the cheap stuff just makes you fight the tool instead of the job. My dad always said you buy cheap tools once and good tools once, and over 20 years of home projects I've found that to be true more often than not. Sure, sometimes the budget option gets the job done, but your mileage may vary depending on how often you use it.
