Unpopular take: I think that Taylor Swift hitting 280 million Instagram followers is actually a bad sign for the platform.
I know everyone's celebrating her number, but to me it just shows how the engagement is all fake now with bots and follow-for-follow junk. I've been tracking my own small business page and it feels like real interactions dropped off a cliff after 2021. Does anyone else feel like these giant milestones just expose how hollow social media's gotten?

Honestly, I see your point but isn't it kinda predictable at this point? Massive celebs have always had inflated numbers, half those followers are probably dead accounts. Feels like getting worked up over a number that doesnt really mean anything anymore.

A million dead bots or real people who just aren't active, it's still a number that signals something huge about a person's reach. Think about it like a billboard on a highway, sure half the cars might be empty or just passing through but that sign still gets seen by a massive amount of eyes. @williams.kim, when a brand or even a politician looks at that follower count, they see potential influence, not just a vanity metric. It's why sponsorships are still tied to those numbers, even the fake ones create a false impression of power and relevance. That very predictability is why it matters, because so many people still treat it as a real scoreboard.
