Caught my cousin lying about his 'homemade' bbq sauce at the family cookout
He was bragging all day about this secret recipe he spent months perfecting. Then my aunt walked by and said 'oh honey, you used my Sweet Baby Ray's again, just like last time'. The look on his face was priceless. He tried to play it off but everyone had already snapped pictures of the empty bottle in the trash. Has anyone else had a family member try to pass off store-bought stuff as homemade?

And that's the thing, it's not even about the sauce being store-bought. It's the whole performance of it, you know? My brother-in-law does the same thing with his "award winning chili" but we all know it's just Hormel with extra cumin dumped in. The embarrassment on his face when my mom walked in with the empty cans was almost worth the bad chili we had to eat for years.

My dad tried this once but with his famous "secret smoked brisket." He spent like two hours telling everyone about the wood he used and the rub he developed over ten years. Then my little cousin found the receipt from Dickey's BBQ in his truck. Nobody said anything but we all looked at each other and just let him keep going. Now every time someone brings food to a family thing my grandma makes sure to ask "is this homemade or out of a box?" just to see who squirms.
