Why does nobody talk about how carpet padding from the 80s was way thicker than what we use now?
I was tearing out some old carpet in a house built in 1984 last Tuesday and the padding under it was almost an inch thick. I looked it up and back then the standard was 40 to 50 ounce rebond, but now most of what I install is 6 to 8 pound density and way thinner. My boss who has been doing this since 1979 says the old stuff felt like walking on a cloud but it broke down and got flat after 10 years anyway. I guess the new stuff lasts longer, but you can definitely feel the difference when you walk on a fresh install now. Does anyone else notice this or am I just getting old and grumpy?
