Vent: My 3 year old never snags on the cheap pad, so stop upselling the thick stuff at every bid
Last month I ripped out a 6 year old berber from a rental in Dayton, the cheap 6 lb rebond held up fine, just some traffic lanes, while the owner told me two other guys tried to sell her the 10 lb pad and a full subfloor job on a slab with no cracks. I get the margin on upsells, but pushing thick pad under a tight weave just makes the floor feel mushy and the seams show sooner, and half the time the customer is a landlord who needs it to last, not feel like a mattress. How do you all decide when the pad grade actually matches the carpet, or do you just quote one option and let them pick?
Friend of mine manages an apartment complex in Toledo with about 40 units, and he's been using the same 6 lb pad under FHA loop for a decade. The pattern I see everywhere is people selling the most expensive option instead of the right one, whether it's carpet pad or phone plans or mattress firmness. Thick pad under tight weave is like wearing thick socks in tight shoes, it doesn't add comfort, it just makes everything fit wrong.
