The week I stretched a whole house in reverse and my knees still hate me
So last month I took a job redoing carpet in a split level out in Beaverton, about 1400 square feet of cheap berber the homeowner picked up at a warehouse sale. Everything was going fine until I pulled the old tack strip and found the subfloor had a hump in the hallway you could feel through your socks. Instead of leveling it I decided to stretch from the far wall back toward the stairs, which I never do, and let me tell you the seaming iron was fighting me the whole way. Three days on that house instead of the two I quoted, and I ate the difference because the lady was nice and kept bringing me coffee. The carpet still ripples a little near the bathroom door and I know it, but she swears she can't see it. What gets me is I broke my own rule about always checking the floor before I give a number. Anybody else ever catch a hump too late and just power through it?
