Pulled up 30 year old Berber in a Boise rental and could not believe what was under it
I got called out to rip out the old carpet in a duplex over on Orchard Street last weekend and the owner was sure the floor underneath was ruined. When I got the last of the tackstrip up, the original 1960s oak was sitting there with just a few stains, and after a quick sand it looked like a totally different room. What do you all tell homeowners who want to keep the old hardwood when they only called you for carpet?
My uncle pulled carpet out of a place near 12th and Main back in 2011 and found honey colored maple underneath that had never seen the light of day since 1948. The guy who owned it was gonna cover it right back up with cheap vinyl because he figured old wood meant problems. We talked him into a two day sand and stain and he ended up getting an extra 40 bucks a month in rent just for having real floors. Nine times out of ten the wood under there is fine, it just needs some love and somebody willing to put in the work. I always tell folks to at least peek before they cover it up, because you can't undo that once the plywood goes down. That Boise oak you found is gonna outlast any carpet they could've bought, that's for sure.
