Old timer told me to stop stretching carpet the same way every time

I tried it on my next two jobs and the carpet laid way flatter, especially around doorways. Made me rethink how I approach every single room now. What specific feedback changed your install process?

Man, that zigzag trick sounds brilliant. I feel your pain on the carpet shuffle, we all look ridiculous doing it but hey, whatever works. It's wild how one piece of advice can make you feel like you been doing it wrong for years. I had a similar moment when a guy told me to pull carpet tighter across the middle of the room before touching the edges. Thought I knew better, tried it on a nightmare bedroom with a wonky subfloor, and it laid down like glass. Makes you wonder how much other stuff we're missing just because nobody told us different.

Funny how some random "old timer" advice can totally shake up what you thought was gospel (and probably saved your back too). I had a guy tell me to stop stretching in a straight line from the wall and instead work in a zigzag pattern across the room. Thought he was pulling my leg, but tried it on a tricky living room with four doorways and it was like magic, everything laid down dead flat. Now I look like an idiot doing the carpet shuffle, but hey, the results speak for themselves.

The zigzag trick works because it lets you work the slack out in different directions, same principle as pulling a tarp tight from all corners. Next time try running your knee kicker at a 45 degree angle toward the corners instead of straight down the wall, makes the final cuts way cleaner. Old guys figured this stuff out before power stretchers existed so they had to finesse it, and those methods still beat the modern shortcuts half the time.
