My kid asked me why we put the pretty side down
I was laying a nice wool blend in a living room last Tuesday, and my 7 year old was watching. He looked at the pattern, then at the floor, and said, 'Dad, if the carpet is so nice, why do you hide it under the floor?' I had to stop and think for a second. I've been doing this for 22 years and never once thought about it that way. I just told him the floor needs a soft, warm blanket too. Has a customer ever asked you a question that made you stop and smile?

Ever have a client ask why you put padding under hardwood? Had one tell me it's like putting socks on before shoes. Made my whole week.

That's a good one. Had a guy last year who said the same thing about underlayment. Told him it's more like shock absorbers for your floor. Stops the planks from rubbing and making noise, adds a bit of give for walking. He got it after that.

Man I used to think underlayment was just upselling people on something they didn't need. Then I did my own floors a couple years back and skipped it. Hated the hollow sound underfoot and felt every little grain. Put some in on the next room and yeah, socks before shoes is pretty spot on honestly.
