Lost $400 on a bad seam iron last month

I picked up a cheap seam iron off Craigslist for $40 in Denver and it took me three jobs to realize it was burning the backing on every seam I did. Had to redo a whole bedroom and a hallway because the tape was melting wrong. Anyone else get burned by used tools that seemed like a good deal?

Nah, sounds like user error to me.

Well hold on now, I gotta push back on that a little. Some of those cheap irons really do eat through your tape no matter how careful you are with them. I've seen it happen to people who know what they're doing. Sometimes the heat distribution is just bad or the coating on the plate starts flaking off after a few uses. That's not user error, that's just bad product design.
