Can we talk about how I used to eyeball seam tape with a clothes iron and now I won't touch a seam without a seaming iron
When I started out doing apartments in Lubbock around 2011, I thought a regular clothes iron and a damp towel was all anybody needed for seams. I would lay the tape, press it down slow, and tell myself it looked fine. Then about 4 years in, I did a 12 unit turnover at a complex off 82nd street and got called back on 9 of them within a year because the seams were lifting at the edges. The manager was nice about it the first time and not nice at all the second time. I finally dropped the $130 on an actual seaming iron with the weight and the teflon shoe, and the difference was stupid obvious on the very first seam. It heats even, it glides, and the tape actually melts into the backing instead of just getting warm on top. I still see guys on crews using irons and I want to say something but I usually don't. What got you all to finally buy the right tool for a job you do every single day?
Oh come on, a hundred and thirty bucks? A good iron and a wet towel got me through years of units and not one call back. Maybe the tape was the real problem and not your iron, cause heat is heat no matter what brand name is stamped on it.
