Am I the only one who cut a carpet seam with a utility knife after the hot blade died?

My hot knife crapped out halfway through a big glue-down job in a Scottsdale condo last Thursday. I was in a bind, so I grabbed a fresh utility blade and tried to cut the seam freehand. The edge was way cleaner than I expected, no fuzz at all. I always thought you needed the hot tool for a perfect seam, but now I'm not so sure. Has anyone else gotten a decent seam with just a sharp blade?

Wait you were doing a glue down job in a SCOTTSDALE condo last THURSDAY? That sounds like a specific nightmare with that heat. I can't believe the blade worked so well, I was always told the hot tool was the only way. Maybe we've been wasting money on those things for years.

Grab a metal straight edge from your kit next time. A sharp utility blade against that guide gives you a factory cut every time. The heat just melts the fibers, but a clean slice works just as well.

Used to swear by the hot knife. Now I'm wondering if I just liked the smell of melting carpet.
