Why I quit using a speed square for rafters after a job in Boise
Everybody on the crew swore by the speed square for cutting rafters, and I went along with it for a long time. Then last fall we framed a garage in Boise with a pretty steep 9/12 pitch, and my cuts were off just enough that the sheathing fought us on every sheet. An old timer named Ray watched me mark one, grabbed a scrap of 2x4, and showed me how a plain framing square and stair gauges gave him a truer line with less fiddle. I switched that same afternoon and my last three roofs have gone up way cleaner. Anyone else ditch the speed square for pitch work, or am I the odd one out here?
Yeah I read a thing on a framing forum where a bunch of old guys said the same thing about steep pitches. Said the speed square gets you close but stair gauges on a framing square hold the line better when you're cutting a lot of the same rafter. Been meaning to grab a pair and try it on my next one.
