Watching a guy frame a whole garage by himself in Boise changed my mind about layout marks

I was helping my cousin with a shed build in his backyard last month, and his neighbor, this older guy named Ray, was framing a two-car garage solo. I always thought my chalk lines and pencil marks on the plates were good enough, you know? But Ray had these bright orange paint pens and was marking everything, the stud locations, the window openings, even little arrows for which side the sheathing went. He said he picked it up from a crew building spec homes in Meridian. I watched him for maybe twenty minutes, and the speed he worked at was crazy, no double-checking the tape, just bang, bang, bang. I bought a three-pack of those paint pens the next day for like twelve bucks. Used them on a small deck job last week, and I swear it cut my layout time by a third. Has anyone else switched to marking with paint instead of chalk or pencil? I'm curious if it holds up in the rain before you get things covered.

Paint pens are a total game changer.

My old foreman in Bend would have fired me on the spot for using a paint pen, swore by a sharp carpenter's pencil. I saw a concrete crew using them to mark rebar grids and it clicked. I use the cheap ones from the hardware store, the kind with the fat felt tip. They don't run in the rain like chalk, and you can see that bright line from across the site. I still use a pencil for fine marks, but for laying out plates or deck joists, it's paint all the way now.

Yeah, my buddy learned that the hard way framing a garage in the spring. He laid out all his top plates with a pencil, then a surprise drizzle came through overnight. Wiped out half his marks and he had to re-measure everything in the mud. Next day he grabbed a paint pen from his truck and never looked back. He said it felt like cheating after fighting with chalk lines and pencils for years.
