TIL the $12 plastic laser level I laughed at actually holds up on cabinet installs
A guy on my crew pulled out one of those cheap self-leveling lasers from the big box store about 6 months ago and I gave him a hard time about it. I had been using a 4 foot Stabila and a chalk line for every cabinet run because that was how my old boss in Duluth trained me. Then we hung 22 feet of uppers in a kitchen remodel and his lines were dead on, we checked with the 6 foot level twice and never needed a shim. I still keep the Stabila in the truck but that little thing has earned a spot in my belt bag. Anyone else got a cheap tool that surprised them like that?
Man I feel this. My old boss in Duluth was the same way, 4 foot Stabila or you were a hack. I ate so much crow when a $20 empire torpedo level from the clearance bin ended up being the one I grabbed for every door slab. Checked it against the good one and it was true. Six months later it still lives in my pouch and the Stabila stays in the truck unless I need a long run. Funny how the cheap stuff sneaks up on you.
