Talked to a retired builder at the hardware store about his old miter saw

He said he still uses his 30 year old Makita because the new ones have plastic gears that strip after a few big cuts. I checked mine when I got home and sure enough, the housing was cracked. How many of you have seen tools get worse over time?

Yeah, it's this planned obsolescence thing everywhere now. My mom's washing machine from the 90s ran forever, but the new one we got her needed a repair in under two years. They just don't build stuff to last anymore, because they want you to buy another one. It feels like a scam we all just have to accept.

Planned obsolescence gets talked about a lot, but sometimes a tool just breaks. @riley_schmidt, your mom's old washer was a tank, but plenty of new stuff works fine for years. People just post online when things go wrong, not when they work like they should.

My buddy's new drill chuck just fell apart last week.
