Shoutout to the $18 Kreg jig that saved my cabinet job

Bought a Kreg pocket hole jig at the Rockler in Denver about 3 years back for $18 on sale. Used it on a set of shop cabinets last month and the joints came out dead square, no splitting, no callbacks. Then I got cocky and tried it on some cheap 1/2 inch particle board and blew out the face on 4 of them, so I guess it only saves you if you pick the right stock. Anybody got a favorite screw length for 5/8 melamine or am I just asking for trouble?
