My cutting board glue-ups stopped sliding around after I put down a $6 shelf liner
I do a lot of edge grain cutting boards in my garage shop and for about two years my glue-ups were a mess. Every time I stacked the strips and clamped them, the whole pile would slide sideways on my bench and I would end up spending ten minutes trying to get everything lined back up before the glue started setting. Last month a buddy who runs a cabinet shop in Grand Rapids told me to stop fighting it and just lay down a cheap non slip shelf liner first. I picked up a roll at the hardware store for six bucks and cut a piece about two feet square. First glue up after that, the strips stayed put on their own and I had the clamps on in under a minute. I have done maybe fifteen boards since then and not one has shifted. The squeeze out still makes a mess but that is a whole different problem. If you do a lot of panel glue ups, what are you using to keep things from walking on the bench?
Yep, been there. My version of that trick involved a piece of wax paper that did exactly nothing except make the whole stack slide faster, so I basically built a tiny luge track for my walnut strips. Six bucks for shelf liner is way better than the thirty minutes I have spent scraping dried glue off the bench after a pile up. Have you tried the router mat style ones or is the cheap foam stuff holding up fine after fifteen boards?
