Just caught a cheap chisel chipping on a maple board today

Was working in my shop in Portland last month on a dining table. Using a $12 chisel I bought at a flea market. Hit a knot in the maple and a chunk of the blade flew off. Almost took out my thumb. That chisel was 3 years old but never held a good edge anyway. Picked up a set of Narex chisels after that for $60. Night and day difference. Anyone else had a tool failure that nearly cost them a finger?

Ngl that's wild a piece of the blade actually flew off. I've had chisels chip before but never had a chunk go flying like that. That knot must have been a beast. Glad your thumb survived.

Read a blog post last week that said cheap chisels are basically just sharpened metal scrap and now I feel that. Glad your thumb is still attached.
