Glue-up hickory countertops seemed like a bad idea until I did my kitchen last March

I was dead set against doing a glue-up countertop because I thought it would look cheap and fall apart in a year. After my neighbor in Portland convinced me to try it with tight bond and a biscuit joiner, the seam is basically invisible and it's held up through water spills and heavy use. Has anyone else found a non-traditional material or method that surprised them?

Honestly, I was the same way. Thought glue-up counters only belonged in a rental or a weekend cabin, not a real kitchen. @pat_coleman that's exactly where I was at until I helped a buddy with his install last fall. The way those joints disappear with good prep is wild, and it's way tougher than I gave it credit for. Now I'm actually planning to do our island in a glue-up instead of dropping cash on solid slab.

And honestly @ellis.mia you're spot on about the joints thing. I think the biggest shock for me was how much the finish matters too, like with a good glue-up you can sand and stain it to match anything and it ends up looking way more custom than people expect. It's kind of making me rethink the whole budget for our kitchen reno honestly.

Used to hate the idea. Might try it now.
