Was totally wrong about networking events being useless

I used to think career networking events were just awkward meetups where people hand out business cards and nothing real happens. I skipped them for about 2 years after college. Then I went to one last spring at a local co-working space in Austin mostly because my friend dragged me there. I ended up talking to a guy who worked at a company I'd been watching for months. He gave me a direct referral that got me an interview within a week. Has anyone else had a surprise win from an event they almost blew off?

One referral in two years doesn't justify forcing everyone into those rooms.

I get the whole "one referral in two years" thing but honestly that one referral changed my whole situation. Same thing happened to me at a meetup I almost bailed on - just needed one solid connection to make it worth it.

See it the other way - that one connection paid for all the bad meetings.
