Walked into a Houston coworking space and saw 3 job coaches giving the same scripted advice
I dropped by a networking event at a coworking spot off Westheimer last Tuesday. Paid $25 to get in, and within 10 minutes I heard three separate 'career coaches' tell people to just 'update your LinkedIn headline' and 'network more.' That's it. No mention of industry trends, no talk about certifications that actually matter, no breakdown of which skills are in demand. It felt like a cookie cutter assembly line. I get that basic advice works for some, but at what point do we admit these paid-for pep talks are just recycled blog posts with a handshake? Has anyone else sat through one of these events and felt like the $25 entry fee was pure theater?

A buddy of mine paid $40 for a similar gig in Dallas last spring. The coach spent 45 minutes on a slide deck about "personal branding" and handed out a worksheet you could have found on Google in two seconds. He said the only useful part was the free coffee. Now he just hits up the free library workshops instead and saves his money.
