Used to think networking events were a total waste of time

I skipped them for years because I figured it was just awkward small talk. Last month I went to one in Denver because a coworker dragged me along, and I ended up getting a lead on a job opening that paid $15k more than my current role. Has anyone else had a random event actually pay off like that?
