Unpopular opinion: I turned down the $8k raise for the job with no title change

Everyone said take the money, but the raise came with a non-compete that locked me out of my whole field for 2 years, so I stayed put at $61k. Six months later my old teammate who took that same deal got laid off and couldn't work anywhere for a year. Did I play it too safe or was that the right call?
