Job offer got pulled after a background check over a 5 year old mistake

Last week I had a solid offer from a company in Austin, $78k for a project coordinator role. I was all set to start next Monday, and then they flagged a misdemeanor from a camping trip in 2019 where I accidentally kept a park pass. I thought it was sealed, but it showed up and they rescinded the whole thing. Has anyone else had an old minor charge mess up a career move like this?

Isn't that how everything works now, one mistake follows you forever?

Huh, that's a tough break but I gotta wonder if it's really that serious. Like, a $78k job pulling the offer over a park pass thing? That feels extreme unless there's something else going on. Maybe they're just super strict or had a bad experience, but I've seen people get hired with way worse on their record. You sure it wasn't just a convenient excuse for them to back out for another reason? Or maybe check if the company has some policy about any charges at all, even minor ones (which would be kind of weird for a project coordinator role).
