$800 for a career coach and it was a total waste of money

I paid this guy in Phoenix $800 for a 6 week career coaching package. He just read from a script about updating my LinkedIn and told me to network more. Real innovative stuff. Did anyone actually get something useful from one of these programs or did I just pick a bad one?

Actually, a good coach pushes you past surface stuff and calls you on your own excuses (which some people desperately need).

Dug into one of those programs myself a few years back... spent about the same amount and walked away with nothing but a headache and a slightly better looking LinkedIn that still got me zero calls. The guy kept telling me to "reach out to people in my network" like I hadn't already tried that and gotten ignored 90% of the time. Grace is right though, a good coach would've called me out for sitting around waiting for magic instead of actually doing the boring follow-up work. I think the real problem is half these people are just reading off some generic playbook they bought online, not actually customizing anything to your situation. If anyone finds one that doesn't just spout common sense for top dollar, let me know... I could use a real kick in the pants.

Ten months and $2,800 into one of those programs and I finally realized I was just paying someone to tell me things my uncle could've said for free. The follow up work part hit me hard because I was definitely one of those people waiting for the phone to ring instead of picking it up.
