I had to pick between defending a guy who worked 16 hour shifts at a diner outside Austin or admitting that what he said 8 years ago was bad. I went with the second option after reading the full thread. It was about stiffing servers on slow nights, and I just couldn't back that, even if his food was good. Has anyone else had to separate a person's past words from their current work?

Wait, hold on. You said he actually admitted to stiffing servers on slow nights? Like, that was his actual take, not just a joke or something taken out of context? I mean, idk, that changes everything for me too. There's no way to defend someone who thinks it's okay to punish the waitstaff because the restaurant isn't busy. They still have to be there, they still do the work, and they still rely on tips to make a living wage. His food being good doesn't matter if he's out here telling people it's fine to not tip when it's slow. That's just a bad take, plain and simple.

I actually had a boss at a diner back in 2014 who flat out told us on slow Tuesday nights, "If you're only making minimum wage without tips, that's on you for working a slow shift." He said it right to my face during a break. That kind of attitude just shows a total lack of respect for the people doing the actual work. @the_laura, you hit the nail on the head - it doesn't matter how good the food is if the chef is telling customers to screw the servers when it's quiet. It's just basic decency, and anyone who doesn't get that isn't worth defending.
