Rant: back in 2016 a guy could say something dumb on Twitter and we all just moved on by lunch
I used to see some model or TV host say something tone deaf and the worst that happened was a few quote tweets and a blog post dragging them for a day. Around 2020 it flipped and now one bad clip from a podcast gets a full week of apology videos, brand drops, and a subreddit tracking their every move. I still follow a few of these cases out of habit but half the time I can not even tell what the person actually did wrong, just that 40,000 people are mad about it. Did the bar actually get lower or is it just that we see every single take now instead of the 5 that made it to TV?
Man, this is the same thing that happened with everything, not just Twitter. Remember when a bad movie just came and went? Now every flop gets a thousand video essays and a whole campaign about why it ruined cinema. Same with eating at a chain restaurant or liking the wrong band. Somewhere along the way we all got handed a microphone and a scoreboard, and now every small thing has to be sorted into good or bad with a running tally. The takes didn't get worse, we just built a machine that never lets any of them die.
